Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 15: Stating that they do not agree with the US's human rights report, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hassan Mahmud said that in many cases, the human rights situation in Bangladesh is better than in the United States.

The minister said this while responding to questions from reporters at a gathering at Palm View Restaurant in the capital's Kurmitola on Thursday (April 14) evening. Bangladesh Editor's Forum organized a discussion and Iftar gathering titled 'Mahe Ramadan and Mass Media'.

The Information Minister said, "I have seen the US State Department's human rights report. We do not agree with the information about Bangladesh in this report. We believe that the data in this report has been collected from certain sources. The report is based on one-sided and misleading information provided by those sources."

The joint general secretary of the Awami League said that in fact in many cases the human rights situation in Bangladesh is better than in the United States, though not in all cases. Because there is no prison in our country like the way people are tortured at Guantanamo Bay in the United States. The way George Floyd was assassinated in the United States, there has never been such an assassination in our country. There have been no incidents in our country where four people have been killed in an attack on the US Parliament, with miscreants sitting in the Speaker's chair. The majority of those killed in police shootings in the United States over the past 10 years were minorities. For these reasons, in many cases, the human rights situation in Bangladesh is better than in the United States.

Dr. Hassan Mahmud said that the United States is examining this report and the judiciary in the country works very independently. That is why the verdict was passed against the government and the MPs of the ruling party went to jail.

He further said that Bangladesh has very close relations with the United States. The security forces mentioned in the human rights report are also receiving technical assistance from the United States. With the help of this technical assistance and other issues, I think if there is any error, there is an opportunity to correct it in the future.

Replying to another question, the Information Minister said that in their recent report, the World Bank has hinted at high growth in the economy of Bangladesh this year. The World Bank report also says that our economy has turned around amid Corona situation. Those who criticize at night, I hope they will stop criticizing after this report.
