Hurting religious sentiments is punishable offence: Chief Justice

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Nov 25: Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui said insulting any religion or hurting religious sentiments is a punishable offence.

He said that all people have equal right to religion and security. All religions are equal under the law. Therefore, insulting any religion or hurting religious sentiments is a punishable offence.

He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the Vijaya Punarmilani-2022 function organized at the Supreme Court Lawyers' Association building on Thursday (November 24).

Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui said that religion helps to guide the daily life of people and gives fulfillment of spirituality.

He said that the constitution of Bangladesh mentions that all the people of this country have equal rights to religion and security. All religions are equal under the law. Therefore, insulting any religion or hurting religious sentiments is a punishable offence.

Referring to ignorance as dangerous, the Chief Justice said that the most dangerous thing for religion is ignorance. This ignorance creates differences between people.

He said, if the people of every religion read the scriptures of their respective religions properly with an open mind and follow the religious rules with full heart, then the darkness of ignorance will disappear. Besides, religious message and religion will be awakened.

He said, religion belongs to everyone but Bangladesh belongs to us. Citizens cannot feel solidarity with the state if the state does not belong to everyone. As a result, the state cannot expect obedience from its citizens. As our culture has managed to bring all religions and people in one line, we have won by forgetting all differences and agitating for language.

The great liberation war is the pride of all Bangladesh. People of all communities including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians sacrificed their lives by participating in this liberation war. He said, those who say majority or minority about the people of the country say against the spirit of the constitution. I don't know how they see 1971.

The Chief Justice said, National Poet Nazrul Islam wrote in Sirajganj Bengal Muslim Conference on November 6, 1932 that my religion should not hurt other religions. Don't cause pain to others. He also said that Islam's principle of tolerance, hurting different religions is highly reprehensible in the eyes of Islam. He said the purpose of the youth society is that if you cannot respect people as a human being, then where are you Muslim.
