Dhaka, May 17: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that she had returned to the country from exile with the sole aim of making the people of the country smile.

She said, "I returned to the country to put a smile on the face of the people, because it was the dream of my father (Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman)."

The Prime Minister made the remarks at a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the NEC auditorium in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Tuesday morning. She attended the virtual meeting from his official residence Ganobhaban.

Recalling the day she returned from forced exile on May 17, 1981, Sheikh Hasina said, "When I landed at the airport, I did not find any of my close relatives, but millions of people loved me. This is my only strength and I am moving forward with this strength."

Stating that she faced many obstacles during her country-wide tour after returning back to Bangladesh, the Prime Minister said, "I have gained the trust and love of the people of Bangladesh. No matter how much propaganda, how much talk, the people of Bangladesh still have faith and trust in me."

Sheikh Hasina said that she had never thought of taking such a big responsibility even though she had participated in politics and procession meetings from her education life. She said she had decided to return to the country on May 17 and do something for the people of the country.

She said the independence of this country, achieved through the blood of millions of martyrs, could never be a failed state. The citizens of the People's Republic of Bangladesh will always have their heads held high.

She urged the ministries and departments to take priority projects at this time and approve the projects that are needed for the country at the moment and be cautious about spending money and resources.

In the context of the Corona and Russia-Ukraine wars, the Prime Minister advised the people to increase production and be frugal in the context of global economic recession and inflation and food crisis in the country.
