Dhaka, December 3: In the second phase, elections for 61 municipalities will be held on January 16. The last date for submission of nomination papers at this stage is December 20. Selection of nomination papers on 22nd December. The last day for withdrawal of candidature is December 29. Alamgir, senior secretary of the Election Commission (EC), announced the schedule on Wednesday (December).

He said polling would be held in 29 municipalities through EVM and in 32 municipalities through ballot. Voting will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, in response to a question from reporters, the secretary said, "The Election Commission has discussed the voting of Chittagong City Corporation at the initial stage. There is no need to schedule here. Only the date of voting will be announced. The date of the vote will be announced if the commission decides. In this case, the vote may take place at the end of December. But if for some reason it is not possible in December, it will be in January."

On the other hand, the first round of municipal elections will be held on December 28. In the first phase, 1,333 candidates have filed nomination papers for 25 municipal elections. Among them, 112 have filed nomination papers for the post of mayor, 283 for the reserved women's seat and 938 for the post of general or councilor. Mizanur Rahman, coordinator of the steering committee and deputy secretary of the EC, said this on Wednesday (December 2).

According to the EC schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers in these municipalities was December 1. The date of selection of nomination papers by the Returning Officer is 3rd December. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is 10 December.

At present there are 329 municipalities in the country. Of these, Panchagarh Municipality, Pirganj in Thakurgaon, Fulbari in Dinajpur, Badarganj in Rangpur, Puthia and Katakhali in Rajshahi, Shahjadpur in Sirajganj, Chatmohar in Pabna, Khoksa in Kushtia, Chuadanga in Khurna, Chalna in Khulna, Barna in Khulna. Elections will be held in Gafargaon, Madan in Netrokona, Manikganj, Dhamrai in Dhaka, Sreepur in Gazipur, Dirai in Sunamganj, Baralekha in Moulvibazar, Shayestaganj in Habiganj and Sitakunda in Chittagong.

According to the law, elected mayors and councilors in the municipality are required to vote within 90 days before the expiration of their term. In this case, the term of more than 250 mayors and councilors of the municipality is coming to an end in mid-February. On December 30, 2015, polling was held simultaneously in 234 municipalities.
