Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 22:Indian water expert Jayanta Basu has suggested a nature-based discussion approach to resolve the long-standing disputes over the distribution of Teesta water.

Presenting a research paper on the second day of the three-day Virtual 7th International Water Conference 2022 on Friday entitled 'Teesta Geopolitics and the Need for a Nature-Based Dialogue', he said, "Although there are 54 transboundary rivers between India and Bangladesh, there is no overall basin-based initiative between the two countries. An overall basin-based approach is needed."

Jayanta Basu, an environmental documentation expert and director of the Environment Governed Integrated Organization, said the nature-based approach to integrated river basin management is important in solving river water problems like the Teesta.

He said regional geopolitics was linked to South Asia's transboundary river problems. Because all the countries in the region are mainly dependent on rivers for agriculture, hydropower and other reasons.

Dr. Jayanta said the unequal position of political power in the region; The impact of international, national and local political relations; Rivers and climate change are important factors in regional geopolitics.

Jayanta, a professor at the Calcutta University, said the example of upstream and downstream countries in terms of water distribution in such a situation does not stand up to scrutiny. He proposed holistic discussions at the inter-country partner level to reach an integrated model on the use of transboundary river water.
