Dhaka, March 26: A few days after Indian conferred the Gandhi Peace Prize 2020 to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the award to Bangabandhu's two daughters, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, at a ceremony at the National Parade Square on Friday (March 26) to mark Mujib's centenary and golden jubilee of independence. 

On March 22, the Ministry of Culture of India announced the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the 2020 Gandhi Peace Prize.

This posthumous award has been given to Bangabandhu for the first time. Bangladesh has expressed deep gratitude to the Government of India for awarding the Gandhi Peace Prize to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This gratitude was expressed in a press release on 23 March.

The statement said, "This prestigious award is a great honor for Bangladesh and its people. This honor carries special significance on the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence. Especially when Bangladesh is going to become a developing country through politics, economy and social change. Laid the foundation."

It further said, "On the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary, Bangladesh is highlighting the important events of his life, at the very moment when this award recognizes his lifelong struggle to ensure the freedom and rights of the people of this country and build a world free from hunger, poverty and exploitation."

On the occasion of the birth centenary and golden jubilee, the people of Bangladesh paid homage to the two great leaders Bapuji and Bangabandhu.
