Indian President Kovind arrives in Dhaka, accorded red carpet reception

Own representative, Dhaka, December 15: President of India Ram Nath Kovind has arrived in Dhaka to take part in the special celebrations of Mujib's birth centenary and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence.

This is the first foreign visit of an Indian president since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. A special Indian Airlines plane carrying Kovind and his entourage landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday (December 15).

President Abdul Hamid welcomed the guests at the airport. There the President of India was given a red carpet reception.

President Kovind is accompanied by the First Lady and their daughter, the Minister of Education of India, two Members of Parliament and a number of senior officials, including Harshvardhan Sringla, the Foreign Secretary of India.

Members of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented the Guard of Honor to the President of India as part of the reception at the airport. After the formalities, he went on a motorcade to the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar on the outskirts of the capital. The President of India will lay a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar in memory of the martyrs of the nine-month long war of independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

President Kovind will then visit the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi to pay homage to the architect of Bangladesh. He will attend the birth centenary of Bangabandhu and the golden jubilee of independence in Bangladesh.

This afternoon, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay a courtesy call on the President of India at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel. During the meeting, various issues of mutual interest could be discussed.

Then President Abdul Hamid will hold talks with his Indian counterpart. In the evening, a dinner will be organized at Bangabhaban with the participation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On the third day of the visit, the President of India will inaugurate and inspect the newly renovated part of the Ramna Kali Temple on December 17. The President of India is scheduled to leave Dhaka for New Delhi that afternoon.
