Dhaka, May 8: An Indian variant of the deadly coronavirus has been identified in the country. The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) said on Saturday (May 8) that the Indian stain had been detected in a sample test at the Evercare Hospital in the capital. It was published in the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID) in Germany.

Director General of the Department of Health Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam told the media that Indian variants have been found in the country. Patients affected by this variant have returned from India. They went to India for treatment and are currently staying in Jessore.

According to sources, the Indian variant (type) of coronavirus has been identified in the bodies of two Bangladeshis returning to India in Jessore. The data was released at noon on Saturday (May 8) by sequencing samples at the Genome Center of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST).

Prof. Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Vice-Chancellor, said, "The Indian variant has been identified in the corona patient sample returned to India. This has been confirmed by some sequence in the lab. The process of complete genome sequencing is now underway. Besides, we have also informed the Jessore hospital authorities about the matter."

Professor Dr Iqbal Kabir Zahid, associate director of the JUST Genome Center and chairman of the Department of Microbiology, said samples from 16 people returning to India from the 250-bed hospital in Jessore had been tested. Of these, three have tested positive for Covid-19. The Indian variant of Corona (B-1.617.2) was found in the bodies of two of them. However, this is not a double mutation. Since one has arrived, there is a risk of double mutations or other variants spreading.

He said the Jessore 250-bed hospital authorities have been informed which patient's sample this variant came from. They kept these patients in isolation.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health said that 60 of those in the institutional quarantine have returned to India with corona after returning home. However, it will take some more time to know whether they are infected with the Indian variant of the Corona, the company said.

According to the Department of Health, 47 people who came to the country through the Akhaura border have also been kept in isolation. At least 14,800 people have flown in since May 19. Of these, 7,514 are in institutional quarantine. The rest have also been quarantined.
