Dhaka, March 20, 2022: March 19 is a milestone in the history of the Liberation War. Therefore, appropriate state recognition will be taken on this day.

This was stated by Liberation War Affairs Minister AQM Mozammel Haque while addressing a discussion meeting organized by Gazipur District Administration on the occasion of Armed Resistance Day on Saturday morning.

He said that we have gained independence through the last great liberation war through a long and hard series of movements and struggles. And this liberation war did not start suddenly. The father of our nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the one who has successfully led the Bengalis in this long and continuous movement and struggle.

The war of liberation started with the declaration of independence in the early hours of March 26, 1971. It is noteworthy that the first armed resistance war was organized in Gazipur on 19 March, inspired by Bangabandhu's historic speech on 7 March before 26 March. Hurmat, Niyamt, Manu Khalifa and Kanu Mia were killed in that resistance war. Many more were injured. March 19 is a milestone in the history of our liberation war.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman presided over the meeting held at the district administration auditorium. Earlier, a wreath was laid at the memorial sculpture 'Anuprerna 19' in memory of the martyrs on March 19 at the District Circuit House premises.

It may be mentioned that after Bangabandhu's speech on 7 March 1971, to weaken the movement, the Dhaka Brigade Headquarters, like other cantonments, directed the Bengali soldiers of the 2nd East Bengal Regiment in Joydebpur to surrender their weapons for disarmament. But the freedom-loving Bengali soldiers and the local people, realizing their intentions, did not surrender their arms and set up roadblocks from Chandna Chowrasta to Joydebpur to stop the Pakistani aggressors.

On 19 March, Brigadier Jahanzeb of the Pakistan Army was returning to Dhaka, leaving the East Bengal Regiment soldiers alerted and the protesters on the streets hoping to collect arms. At that time, the students and people obstructed them at the rail crossing area of Joydebpur and at Chandna crossroads. At that time, when the Pakistani forces fired, the students and the people formed an armed resistance. Hurmat, Niyamt, Kanu Mia and Manu Khalifa were martyred by the Pakistani forces. Many more were injured.

This is the beginning of the armed liberation struggle. Then the slogan became 'Take the path of Joydevpur, make Bangladesh independent'. That was the first armed resistance war of the liberation war against the Pakistani aggressors.
