Iqbal, three others remanded for five more days in Comilla incident

Dhaka, October 30: A Dhaka court has remanded four people, including Iqbal Hossain, arrested as the main accused in the case of keeping the Holy Quran in a temporary puja mandapa on the banks of Nanua Dighi in Comilla. After a seven-day remand, they were produced in the court of Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Farhana Sultana on Friday (October 29) at 2:45pm.

The accused are Iqbal Hossain, Rezaul Islam Ikram, who called the police on 999, Khadem Faisal, assistant of Daroga Bari Mazar Mosque and Humayun Kabir Sanaullah.

Earlier, police arrested Iqbal from Sugandha Point in Cox's Bazar beach area around 10:30 pm on October 21. On the same night, a team of police led by Comilla District Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Sohan Sarkar brought him to the Comilla Police Lines from Cox's Bazar. They reached Comilla at noon on October 22 and initially interrogated him.

Later on October 23 at noon, Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Mithila Jahan Nipar produced Iqbal and four others in the court and sought a 10-day remand. After the hearing, the court granted remand to each of them for seven days.

Meanwhile, Kotwali Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Harun Aur Rashid has filed a case against unidentified persons for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and insulting the Qur'an.
