Japan continues to support Bangladesh on Rohingya issue: Kishida

Dhaka, April 27: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has reiterated his country's support for Bangladesh's efforts to repatriate Rohingyas to Myanmar.

He said Bangladesh has sheltered nearly one million displaced persons from Myanmar and we will continue to support its efforts.

The Japanese Prime Minister said these things in a joint statement after the bilateral talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Japanese Prime Minister's office on Wednesday. In a statement after the summit meeting with the Bangladeshi Prime Minister in his office, the Japanese Prime Minister said, We have upgraded our bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership.

He also said that both countries will work to deepen bilateral relations in various fields and expand cooperation in the international arena.

Kishida said that in today's meeting, the two expressed their commitment to maintaining a free and open international system based on the rule of law as strategic partners at a time when the international system is at a historic juncture.

He said the two countries have agreed to strengthen bilateral ties in a wide range of areas based on the new plan for a free and open Indo-Pacific point announced last month.

The Japanese Prime Minister said, in the economic field, we are making further progress in joint research on the possibility of a Japan-Bangladesh Economic Partnership Agreement.

He said, Bangladesh is an attractive investment destination with significant economic development and therefore we expect the establishment of economic zone and improvement of investment environment will further strengthen the economic relationship between the two countries.
