Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio murder: High court upholds death sentences of four terrorists

Dhaka, September 21: The High Court upheld the death sentence of four militants of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for the murder of Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio in Rangpur. However, the court acquitted one person from the death penalty.

On Wednesday (September 21), the High Court bench of Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolan announced the verdict. The court acquitted Ishaq Ali from the case as the allegations of involvement in the murder were not proved.

The hearing of the death reference and the appeal of the accused to approve the death sentence of five militants of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for the murder of Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur ended on September 19. At the end of the hearing, the verdict was fixed today.

Earlier, the hearing of the death reference and the appeal of the accused started to approve the death sentence of five JMB militants for the murder of Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur on September 4.

On February 28, 2017, Rangpur Special Judge Naresh Chandra Sarkar sentenced five JMB militants to death for killing Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi. Later the death reference (document for approving the death sentence) is sent to the High Court. Besides, the accused appealed and jailed.

Those sentenced to death are Masud Rana alias Mamun alias Mantri of Pashua Tangailpara of Peergacha upazila, Liton Mia alias Rafiq of Gabtali area of ​​Bogra, Ahsan Ullah Ansari alias Biplab of Makar Rajmalli area of ​​Rajarhat of Kurigram, a student of Begum Rokeya University and Sakhawat Hossain of Char area of ​​Haldiya in Saghata of Gaibandhar. Convicted revolution fugitive. Abu Saeed (28) of Kaliganj Bazar in Pirgacha was acquitted earlier as the murder charge was not proved beyond doubt.

On the morning of October 3, 2015, Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio was shot dead in the Alutari area of Kaunia Upazila by the militants of the banned militant organization JMB.
