Jatiya Party announces 24-point election manifesto

Dhaka, Dec 22: The Jatiya Party (JaPa) has announced the party manifesto for the 12th National Assembly elections with the slogan 'Change for Peace, Jatiya Party for Change'. The party's manifesto contains 24-point promises.

The party's general secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu announced the manifesto at the Banani office auditorium of the JaPa chairman on Thursday. In the announced manifesto, important and specific steps like introduction of provincial system, prevention of corruption and money laundering, employment in the ongoing reality of the country, decentralization, delivery of judicial system to people's doorstep, 50 percent of offices outside Dhaka, control of commodity prices are announced.

The manifesto says that if the Jatiya Party comes to power, it will introduce provincial governance in the country. Eight divisions will be upgraded to eight provinces — Uttar Banga Pradesh, Barenya Pradesh, Jahangirnagar Pradesh, Jahanabad Pradesh, Jalalabad Pradesh, Chandradwip Pradesh, Mainamati Pradesh and Chattala Pradesh.

Besides, the government structure will be two tiered. The central government will be called the federal government. There will be a 300-seat National Parliament. And the province will be run by the provincial government. There will be a provincial parliament. Each Upazila or Thana will be considered as the seat of the Provincial Government. At least 50 percent of the headquarters will be shifted from Dhaka to the provincial capital.

Jatiya Party's manifesto promises to reform the election system if it comes to power. Jatiya Party wants to strengthen local government structure by introducing full upazila system including upazila court and family court. The Jatiya Party will make the Parliament an effective institution by bringing all the representatives under the decision-making authority by amending Article 70 except for the budget and no-confidence motion against the government.

The Jatiya Party has promised to repeal the restrictive Kala Kanun Special Powers Act if it comes to power. The number of lower courts and judges will be increased. At the same time, a commission will be constituted at the national level on an urgent basis to uncover the root causes of irregularities, corruption, procrastination and disorganization in the judicial process and system.
