Dhaka, May 20: Rozina Islam, a senior correspondent of the Prothom Alo, has been lodged in jail since Tuesday in a case filed under the Theft and Official Secrets Act. Her bail hearing will be held in the virtual court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billa on Thursday (May 20) morning. Her lawyer Prashant Kumar Karmakar is hoping to get bail on the day.

Karmakar said, "There is no impediment to disclosing accurate information related to public interest for the purpose of the law. Anyone can disclose accurate information related to public interest under Section 4 of the Information Protection Act-2011."

He further said, "Journalist Rozina Islam's earlier report on corruption in the Ministry of Health is in the public interest. Rozina Islam is a professional woman journalist. The charges against her are undesirable. She has a child and is physically ill. Overall, we hope Rozina Islam will get legal bail on Thursday."

Earlier on Tuesday (May 18), the court rejected Rozina Islam's remand application and ordered her to be sent to jail. The court also fixed Thursday (May 20) for her bail hearing.

Shahbagh Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Arifur Rahman Sardar, who is investigating the case, produced her in court on Tuesday morning and applied for a five-day remand.

On the other hand, her lawyer applied for the bail. At the end of the hearing, the judge rejected her remand application. At the same time, the court fixed Thursday for his bail hearing.

Karmakar then applied for her treatment. The court ordered for her treatment as per the jail rules. She was then taken in a prison van to Kashimpur Central Women's Jail in Gazipur, where she is currently lodged.
