Journalists are not arrested only if there is a case under the Digital Security Act

Dhaka, May 22, 2022: No journalist will be arrested immediately after filing a case under the Digital Security Act.

Law Minister Anisul Haque made the remarks at an exchange of views with government pleaders (GPs) and public prosecutors (PPs) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center on Saturday (May 21).

The law minister said, "I have talked to the home minister and told him that if there is a case under the Digital Security Act, it should be sent to the cell first."

The cell will see if the complaint is a prima facie case? If it is a prima facie case, there will be a case, if not, it will not be. ' That is why I have said that arrest should not be made immediately after filing this case. If the primacy is established, if the court thinks it is a heinous crime; Then take appropriate action. Again, if the court thinks that issuing summons is enough then it will issue summons. That is why it is not justifiable to repeal the Digital Security Act.

Anisul Haque said that it is not that some misuse (abuse) did not happen after the Digital Security Act. But now no one will be arrested immediately after filing a case under this law. Where the father of our nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has included freedom of the press as a fundamental right in the constitution, what can his daughter's government do? So that freedom of speech or freedom of the media is disrupted? No, it can't be done and we didn't do it. '

We have enacted the Digital Security Act to deal with crimes like cyber crime. Of course, there are some misuses or abuses after the Digital Security Act. But when I saw it, I sat down with the UN Human Rights Office to fix its (best practices). They have also been visited by the European Union with one of our consultants. '
