Journalists Shafiq Rehman, Mahmudur Rahman convicted of plot to kill Sajeeb Wazed Joy, jailed for 7 years

Dhaka, August 18: A court has ordered five people, including journalist Shafiq Rehman and acting editor of Dainik Amar Desh newspaper Mahmudur Rahman, to be jailed for seven years in the case of conspiracy to abduct and kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son and her IT advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor announced the verdict on Thursday, August 17.

Others who were convicted are Nationalist Socio-Cultural Organization (JSS) vice-president Mohammad Ullah Mamun, his son Rizvi Ahmed alias Caesar and US expatriate businessman Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan.

In the verdict, the court sentenced the defendants to five years imprisonment and a fine of Tk 5,000 for attempted kidnapping, and one month imprisonment in default. Besides, the accused were sentenced to two years' imprisonment and a fine of Tk 5,000 for conspiracy to murder, and one month's imprisonment in default. The judge mentioned in the judgment that the two separate sentences against the accused will run concurrently.

According to the complaint of the case, from any time before September 2011 till now, the vice-president of BNP's cultural organization Jasas, Mohammad Ullah Mamun, and the high-level leaders of BNP and other parties in the alliance led by the party, are accused in Jasa's office in Paltan in the capital, in New York City of America, UK and Bangladesh. They, together, conspired to kidnap and kill Prime Minister's son and her IT advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy in America.

In this incident, Fazlur Rahman, the then Inspector of DB Police, filed this case at Paltan Model Police Station as a plaintiff on August 3, 2015. On February 19, 2018, the police filed a charge sheet against five people including journalist Shafiq Rehman.

The other accused in the case are Mahmudur Rahman, Acting Editor of Dainik Amar Desh, Mohammad Ullah Mamun, Vice-President of Nationalist Social and Cultural Organization (Jasas), his son Rizvi Ahmed alias Caesar, and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, a US expatriate businessman. The court took the testimony of 12 people including Sajeeb Wazed Joy in this case.
