Dhaka, May 10: BNP chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia's birthday has been discussed anew. A copy of Begum Khaleda Zia's coronavirus test report, who is being treated at the hospital, has spread through social media. And that sparked off the discussion. A copy of that report shows that Begum Khaleda Zia was born on May 8, 1946.

Awami League joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim said, "They (BNP) have been celebrating Khaleda Zia's birthday on August 15 for a long time for political purposes. We have been saying for a long time that it is a lie, fabricated. Khaleda Zia celebrated her birthday on National Mourning Day. Now the truth has been revealed. The truth can never be suppressed for long."

Asked about this, BNP organizing secretary Imran Saleh Prince said, "I have not seen the matter. So I cannot comment on it."

Meanwhile, in a status given from his Facebook account, Minister of State for External Affairs Shahriar Alam wrote, "I am associated with the Awami League. The issue is relevant to me at any time and in any situation. Now you are saying that you were born on May 8. As a human being, you and your party leaders should seek a minimum of forgiveness for the indifference you've showed to the grief for so long."

According to several responsible sources of the BNP, the day of martyrdom of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 is known as the day of national mourning. However, in the nineties, Khaleda Zia's birthday was celebrated on August 15 with the encouragement of a pro-BNP journalist and a member of the standing committee. From then on, the issue was criticized by the general public including the political circles.

According to BNP sources, Khaleda Zia celebrated her birthday on August 15, 2014 by cutting a 50-pound cake. Although she did not cut the cake in the early morning of August 15, 2015, she celebrated his birthday by cutting the cake in the evening. However, in 2016, Khaleda Zia canceled the cake-cutting program citing floods and disappearances. She did not cut the cake on August 15 in the following years.
