Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 11: Law Minister Anisul Haque said that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will not be able to participate in the next parliamentary elections according to law.

He said this after inaugurating a training workshop for assistant judges at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the capital on Monday.

The Secretary General of BNP has been saying on various occasions that he will not go to the elections without Khaleda Zia. In response to the questions of the journalists, the Law Minister said that Article 66 of the Constitution states that none can take part in MP election if the person is sentenced to two years or more in a corruption case. She (Khaleda Zia) was convicted by the court.

In response to another question whether Khaleda Zia will be able to participate in the next election, the law minister said that what the law says will happen. The summary is, if the law says she can, she can. But if the law says she can't, then she can't take part in the election. The law as it stands does not seem to allow her to take part.

In response to the question that "Khaleda Zia's appeal is pending but they are not taking the initiative to hear it," Anisul Haque said, "Should I give them advice on what to do or not to do? They are not taking the initiative to hear the appeal, it is not logical that I have to give their excuse."
