Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 29: Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, said the Election Commission (EC) formation law will be considered as a unique milestone in the history of Bangladesh to ensure people's right to vote.

He said the enactment of this law will go one step further to institutionalize the democracy in Bangladesh.

The bridge minister made the remarks at a regular news briefing on contemporary issues at his residence here on Friday. Obaidul Quader, on behalf of the Awami League, extended his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all the members of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament), including the Leader of the Jatiya Sangsad, as the much awaited 'Appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Bill' was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.

Stating that the Awami League led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to ensure democracy and people's right to vote in the light of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the Road Transport Minister said everything has been achieved under the leadership of the Awami League. He said all measures have been taken during the rule of Awami League to make the Election Commission independent, neutral and strong like other democracies of the world.

The Awami League general secretary expressed deep concern over the non-acceptance of the law by the BNP secretary-general.

Obaidul Quader also claimed that the statement made by the BNP secretary general against the law was a rude mockery of democracy, all members of parliament and the constitution and rule of law of Bangladesh.

The bridge minister also said that such blatant remarks were expected from a party or individual who has been spending millions of dollars against the people of Bangladesh by recruiting lobbyists to spread propaganda and conspiracy against the country.
