Dhaka, Nov 8: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to investigate the allegations of irregularities in the by-elections of Laxmipur-3 and Brahmanbaria-2 parliamentary constituencies of the 11th National Assembly. As per the law, the investigation will continue without gazetting the results of these two by-elections.

EC Secretariat Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon on Tuesday afternoon, "The Election Commission is analyzing the allegations of irregularities in the by-elections in Laxmipur-3 and Brahmanbaria-2 constituencies." Instructions have been given to DC, SP and election officer of the concerned district to verify the authenticity. Based on the on-the-ground report given by them, a decision will be taken regarding the results of the announced polls in the two constituencies."

Secretary Jahangir Alam told reporters that this year the Jatiya Sangsad has added a new clause by amending the Representation of the People Order-1972 (RPO). It is clearly stated there that even after the returning officer announces the results of the polls, if any person is aggrieved or any logical information is disclosed to the Election Commission, the Election Commission will suspend the gazette of that seat and take the complaint into consideration. Do a proper investigation. The commission will take a decision in the light of the investigation report. The law has given this power to the Election Commission. Voting was held in those two constituencies last Sunday.
