Liberation War Affairs Ministry proposes to build 14,000 'Bir Nibas' on the occasion of Bangabandhu's 100th birth anniversary

Dhaka, November 16: On the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 50th anniversary of independence, the Ministry of Liberation War Ministry has proposed to construct 14,000 'Bir Nibas' for the wives and children of indigent freedom fighters, heroines, martyrs and late freedom fighters as one of the gifts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A project in this regard has been sent to the Ministry of Planning.

According to Planning Commission sources, a meeting of the Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) was held recently on the project titled 'Construction of Housing for Indigent Freedom Fighters' of the Ministry of Liberation War. The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs and Upazila Administration between July this year and June 2023.

The proposed cost is Tk 2,813.97 crore. The cost for the construction of each Bir Nibas has been estimated at Tk 19.55 lakh. Each house will have 3 bedrooms of 900 square feet. If no one has land, the house will be built on khas land.

Highlighting the context of the project, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs said that those who gained independence by fighting and many of their families have not been able to enjoy economic and social liberation even today. Children, grandchildren are living in poverty.

Initiatives have been taken under the project titled 'Construction of Housing for Indigent Freedom Fighters' as part of the government's multidimensional activities to improve the living standards of freedom fighters and their successors.

The project has been adopted as a modified project of the project proposed by the Ministry of Liberation War and approved by ECNEC ‘Construction of multi-storied buildings for indigent freedom fighters in every district / upazila’.

The project 'Construction of multi-storied buildings for indigent freedom fighters in every district / upazila' was approved at the ECNEC meeting on March 8, 2018 at an estimated cost of Tk 2,273.21 crore.

The specialty of this project is the celebration of the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 50th anniversary of independence.
