Dhaka, October 8: A court in Dinajpur has sentenced a police constable to life imprisonment for abducting and raping a minor girl after promising to marry her.

The verdict was given to convict Nabiul Islam (31), a constable of industrial police, by Dinajpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Sharif Uddin Ahmed.

It also acquitted two persons, Nabiul's brother Nurul Islam and sister-in-law Kawsar Yasmin Chuti, who were earlier named in the chargesheet.

The incident took place in 2013, when Nabiul, along with the help of his brother and sister-in-law abducted a 17-year-old school girl.

Later, she was taken to Dhaka, where they told her they were married and started a family.

A year later, in 2014, Nabiul attempted to dump the girl, telling her the marriage never took place.

As the girl shouted for help, local caught the police and handed him over to cops.

Being a cop himself, Nabiul was released soon after.

However, the victims grandmother filed a complaint against the three and Nabuiul's father, retired police constable Zafar Ali.

Nabiul has been sentensed to life imprisonment and fined Tk10,000.

He is presently in jail.
