Lightning strikes kill six in Islampur

Dhaka, May 21: Six people were killed in a separate lightning strike in Jamalpur's Islampur. They died at different places in the upazila on Thursday (May 20) afternoon.

According to local sources, three persons were killed in Jarultala of Patharshi union, one in Kalirchar of Sapdhari union, one in Batikamari of Palbandha union and one in Chandanpur of Gaibandha union.

Patharshi Union Parishad Chairman Iftekhar Hossain said Enamul Haque, 35, son of Jabbar Khan of West Gamaria, Kalu Sheikh, 45, son of Hasan Sheikh and Shahjahan, 38, son of Kalam Sheikh were killed in a lightning strike while harvesting paddy in the afternoon.

Palbandha Union Parishad chairman Bir Muktijoddha Shahadat Hossain Swadhin said Jabed Ali, 68, son of Abdul Quddus Chandu, died in a lightning strike in Batikamari village while working in the field. He also said that three cows had died in Bahadurabad village of the union.

Sapdhari Union Chairman Joynal Abedin said a farmer named Billal Hossain (33) died in a lightning strike while picking nuts in Kali Char. Billal is the son of Quddus Mollah of the local Projapati char.

Gaibandha Union Parishad chairman Maksudur Rahman Anshari said a farmer named Mohijal (50) died in Chandanpur village while working in the field. His wife Delwara Begum, 40, was injured.

Islampur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer MA Taher said five people injured in the lightning strike were being treated at the hospital.
