Magnitude 5.6 quake shakes several parts of Bangladesh

Dhaka, October 8: Moderate tremors were felt in the eastern and south-eastern parts of the Bangladesh at 12:28 am on Friday as an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale struck. The epicenter was reported at 477 kilometres from Dhaka.

Md. Ghanif, an electrical engineer at the Earthquake Unit of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said, “The quake was felt at 12:28 am [on Friday]. The epicenter was reported below the Myanmar border. As a result, more tremors may be felt in Chittagong. However, we did not feel much tremors in Dhaka. According to the information received so far, the quake was felt in Chittagong, Khulna and Bagerhat, including the capital Dhaka."

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) website, the quake's epicenter was 135 kilometers west of Mandalay in Myanmar and 114 kilometers below the earth's surface.

No damage was reported from the quake.
