Dhaka, February 18: Md. Ashraf Hossain alias Kamal (47) killed his wife and tried to call it suicide. However, the police investigation revealed the mystery of the murder, but he was released on bail and went into hiding. He chose journalism as his profession to stay above doubt. Ashraf was identified on Facebook after being a fugitive for almost 17 years.

He was finally arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) from Ashulia in Dhaka on Thursday night (February 17). He also served as a journalist and a member of the executive committee of the Ashulia Press Club. This was stated by Commander Khandaker Al Moin, Director, Legal and Media Wing, RAB at a press conference held at RAB Media Center, Karwan Bazar, Dhaka on Friday (February 18).

He said that on the night of February 1, 2005, due to a family quarrel, Ashraf killed his wife Sanjida Akhtar by suffocating her in front of his infant son. In order to pass the murder as suicide, the body was hung from the ceiling fan with the veil of the deceased.

The incident was initially an unnatural death case. However, Ashraf was arrested as a suspect. Twelve days after the incident, he was released on bail with the help of his father-in-law. Then suddenly one day Ashraf went into hiding. Since then he has not been in contact with his home, workplace or relatives.

The RAB official said that after the autopsy report proved that Sanjida had been killed by suffocation, a murder case was filed against Sonargaon police station on April 28 accusing Ashraf. The court sentenced Ashraf, the fugitive accused in the case, to death after the case was proved to be murder.
