Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 21: The water from the Indian hill slopes is entering the locality by breaking the embankments protecting the Barak, Surma and Kushiyara rivers of Sylhet. Various areas of Zakiganj upazila have been flooded due to this.

Roads, ghats and crop lands were submerged on Thursday (May 19) at around 12:30 am when the river bank collapsed and water entered from the Barak river in India.

Several areas of the upazila including Amalsid, Pallikandi, Barthakuri, Sharifganj, Khasirchak and Sonasar were submerged. At the same time, the road leading to Amalshid with Upazila Sadar has also been submerged in water. As a result, traffic on this road has been closed since morning.

Despite the rapid rise in water in Zakiganj, the flood situation has improved in Sylhet metropolis and other upazilas of the district. The water level at Kanaighat and Sylhet city points of Surma river has decreased by 20 cm and 12 cm respectively. As a result, the water level in Sylhet city has decreased by about 7-8 inches. However, millions of people are in crisis of electricity, clean water and food.

Asif Ahmed, Executive Engineer, Water Development Board, Sylhet, told Jago News that the water level measurement at 12 noon on Friday showed that the water level in the main river Surma Sylhet Sadar Point has decreased by 12 cm as compared to the last 24 hours. It is still flowing at 11.15 cm above the danger level. At noon on Thursday, the danger level was 11.27 cm.

Besides, at Kanaighat (Sylhet) point it has decreased by 20 cm. However, it is still flowing at 13.7 cm above the danger level. The epicenter was reported at 13.9 cm on Thursday afternoon.

Ahmed Jamil, a resident of Shamimabad area of the city, said that although there was less water in Sylhet on Friday than on Thursday, there was still water in the houses.

Shamim, a resident of Amalsid village, said that at least 20-30 feet of the river bank collapsed due to water pressure. Another 50 feet broke on Friday morning. In this situation, the water coming directly from Barak river is flowing in Surma-Kushiara and is also entering the locality of Amalshid area.
