Massive blaze guts Gazipur market; one shopkeeper killed

Dhaka, December 1: Hundreds of shops and belongings were gutted in the fire in Gazipur; At that time, a shopkeeper died of 'heart failure'. The fire broke out in the afternoon at Kaliakair market in the district. Authorities could not say the cause of the fire.

Md. Kabirul Alam, station officer of Kaliakair Fire Service, said the fire broke out in the market around 5:30 pm. Upon receiving the news, six units of the fire service went and controlled the fire in an effort of about an hour. "One shopkeeper died of a heart attack after seeing the severity of the fire."

The fire service official said the fire started from a shop on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. Later it became uncontrollable in a moment and spread to the surrounding tinshed and semi-finished shops. At this time panic spread among the traders. Pedestrian traffic is stopped.

He said that after receiving the news, personnel of two units of Kaliakair Fire Service Station, two units from Joydebpur and two units from Savar EPZ went and tried to control the fire. The extent of the damage and the cause of the fire are not yet known.

Bipad Kumar Saha, a shopkeeper, said that after the fire broke out, Ranjit Ghosh, a sweet shop owner, lost consciousness at one stage while trying to remove his belongings. When he was taken to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex, doctor Abdur Razzak declared him dead.

Kaliakair Police Station OC Md. Monwar Hossain Chowdhury said Ranjit Ghosh, a sweet shop owner, died of a heart attack after the fire broke out. He was not injured. OC Monwar said that the police initially found out that 102 shops were burnt in the fire. Additional police were deployed at the scene soon after the fire broke out.
