Mastermind of DBBL money robbery arrested

Dhaka, March 15: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Intelligence Department has arrested three persons, including the mastermind Akash, involved in the robbery of Tk 11 crore from Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) in Dhaka's Uttara. At this time Tk 58 lakh 7 thousand was recovered. The arrested are - Md. Hriday (21), Md. Milan Mia (29) and mastermind Akash.

Earlier last Sunday Tk two crore 53 lakh 98 thousand 500 was recovered. Out of the looted Tk 11 crore, Tk 7 crore one lakh 10 thousand 500 were recovered in three phases. So far, 11 people including mastermind Akash have been arrested in this case.

Additional Commissioner of Police, Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, Head of the Intelligence Department of DMP, said this at a press conference held at DMP Media Center on Tuesday.

He said that different groups at different levels were engaged in different responsibilities in the implementation of the plan to extort money. Some were planners, some were mobile and SIM collectors and some just worked as tenants during incidents. 4/5 people work as master planners and implementers. Two of them named Akash and Sohail Rana plan the robbery.

The DB chief said that Akash, the mastermind of the robbery, could not get into the microbus after looting the money, but managed to escape from there. Akash shares the robbery with his old acquaintance Eamon Milan and offers to join the operation. They gave him the responsibility of recruiting manpower. Eamon Milan informed his acquaintance Sanwar about the matter and assigned manpower, procurement of SIMs, and purchase of mobile phones.

Sanwar procured eight new SIMs and mobile sets and recruited a total of nine members from his home districts of Sunamganj and Netrakona in the robbery operation. Later they all gathered in Dhaka two days before the incident. The planners brought them to Dhaka and bought them new clothes and shoes.

After 7 am on March 9, about Tk 11 crore was stolen from a vehicle carrying money of the private Dutch-Bangla Bank from the area adjacent to bridge number 11 of Uttara sector 16 of the capital. In the event of this unprecedented robbery from the street in broad daylight, the law and order forces immediately launched a field operation.
