Mayor Atiq becomes member of United Nations Regional Government Advisory Council

Dhaka, Sept 30: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam has been nominated as a member of the United Nations Local and Regional Government Advisory Council.

The nomination was announced in a letter signed by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on September 25. After giving consent, the DNCC Mayor was finally included as a member of the Advisory Council.

DNCC Public Relations Officer Maqbool Hossain gave this information in a press release on Friday evening. The UN Secretary-General noted in his letter that the Advisory Council has a timely and important role in strengthening the involvement of local and regional governments in intergovernmental and national planning. The Advisory Council will play a role in the local and regional level to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and build a modern city.

The letter also mentions that the Advisory Council will advise on local and regional government related matters and activities. To enhance coordination and cooperation, contribute to the revision of issues necessary to achieve our global goals. The members of the Advisory Council will contribute to the issues that should be prioritized at the national level and the consistent role that local and regional governments should play in implementing national goals and global action.

There are 15 members in this advisory council. Two members from the Asia and Pacific region are Mayor Atiqul Islam and Abby Binay, Mayor of Makati City, Philippines.

The other members are three from Europe, three from the African continent, two from North America, three from Latin America and the Caribbean, and two from the Middle East and Central Africa.
