Dhaka, June 2: The High Court has ordered the suspension of the principal and hostel superintendent of MC College in Sylhet for negligence in the case of gang-rape of a housewife. At the same time, the court directed departmental action against them.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah on Wednesday (June 2) gave partial approval to the rule issued in this regard.

Lawyer Mohammad Misbah Uddin was in favor of the writ petition in the court. Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Md. Russell Chowdhury represented the state.

Earlier on Tuesday (June 1), the High Court set Tuesday for the verdict in the case of gang-rape of a housewife at MC College in Sylhet. The court issued a rule asking why no disciplinary action would be taken against the housewives for raping a housewife at MC College on September 29 last year due to the indifference of the college authorities.

At the same time, the High Court formed a joint committee to investigate the gang-rape case. The four-member inquiry committee consisted of Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Md Bazlur Rahman, Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mominun Nesa, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Abul Kashem and Sylhet Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Sharmin Sultana. The inquiry committee later submitted its report to the High Court.

According to the report, the hostel superintendent and guards were negligent in the incident of gang-rape of a housewife at MC College in Sylhet. Therefore, as the head of the institution, the principal of MC College cannot avoid the responsibility of that incident in any way. The main culprits behind the gang-rape were the current caretaker of the hostel, the day guard at the main gate of the hostel, the day guard and night guard in the 5th block and the day guard and night guard in the 7th block.

The report recommends 15 points to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, to ensure that seats in hostels are based on the needs of regular college students, and to strictly prohibit non-students or alumni from staying in hostels.

On the evening of September 25 last year, a housewife came to visit MC College with her husband. At that time, some students from the campus took the housewife along with her husband to the college dormitory. Later, they tied up the husband, beat him and raped the housewife. Upon receiving the news, the police went and rescued them.
