Dhaka, August 2: Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Md Tajul Islam has instructed all concerned, including the councillors of the city corporations, to eradicate Aedes mosquito and bring dengue to a tolerable level within two weeks. He gave the directive at a meeting on 'Strengthening Dengue Prevention and Aedes Mosquito Control' at Dhaka South City Corporation's Nagar Bhaban on Sunday (August 1) afternoon.

"All concerned, including the ministry and city corporations, are working relentlessly to keep the people of the capital mosquito free. Today's meeting is organized with the aim of speeding up the ongoing activities. Work is being done with the goal of controlling the Aedes mosquito and reaching a satisfactory level within the next two weeks," he said.

The minister rued the lack of initiative from the public in the fight against dengue.

"People are not becoming aware even after repeated awareness. The job of the government is to make people aware and the government is constantly doing that job. Now, if people are not aware of the role of Aedes mosquito breeding, then those mosquito bites will be lead to hospitalization with dengue. They will suffer from various problems and blame the government. It is not be appropriate. The government will not be able to protect you unless you are aware of it," Tajul Islam said.

"The lives of millions of people cannot be unbearable for one or two. For a few, the suffering and suffering of the people will not be accepted at all. For this reason, legal action is being taken against those aiding the breeding of Aedes mosquito larvae in their homes or buildings," he added.

Many have been jailed so far for failing to meet the criteria stated by the minister.

"The IEDCR (Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control And Research) predicted that the number of dengue patients and deaths would triple in 2020 compared to 2019. But with the efforts of all of us, it has been proven wrong. Although the number of dengue patients has increased due to the fertile time of Aedes mosquitoes, it will be brought under control in a short time," he said.

"By dividing each ward into 10 sub-zones and forming a committee comprising people from all walks of life, it will be possible to tackle all the problems, including dengue, as well as provide all kinds of services. If the people's representatives work together to unite the people, then any problem can be tackled. Combined efforts never fail," the Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister said.
