Dhaka, May 13: In 2016, Babul Akter was working as Additional Deputy Commissioner in the Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong City Police. At that time, he was often in the limelight due to various courageous steps including anti-militant campaign. At that time, police officer Santosh Kumar Chakma acted as a shadow partner in several operations that Babul was involved in. The one-time CMP officer is currently working as an inspector of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Chittagong Metro.

Santosh has also investigated the first case filed in Mitu's murder. He got the involvement of former 'guru' Babul Akhter in that incident. On this basis, Babul Akhter has been made the main accused in the new case filed by Mitu's father.

It is learned that Babul Akhter fell in love with a foreign NGO worker named Gayatri Amar Singh while on duty in Cox's Bazar. Later, when Babul went on a mission to Sudan, Mahmuda Akhter Mitu, Babul's wife, found out about the love affair through a mobile phone at home. When Babul went to China a few months before the assassination, Mitu got two books. The beginning and end of their love comes up in the handwriting of the two on multiple pages of that book. When Babul Akhter returned to the country, Mitu's family tried to resolve the issue as a family.

Relevant sources say that a few days later, Babul Akter used his sources and various means to kill Mitu for three lakh rupees. He filed the case himself by acting in mourning to cover up the murder. In the end, there was no relief. After a long five-year investigation, the police found his involvement in the murder of his wife Mitu.

Mitu's father, former police inspector Mosharraf Hossain, filed a case against Babul Akter at the Panchlaish police station in Chittagong on Wednesday. The other seven accused in the case are Md. Kamrul Islam Sikder alias Musa (40), Ehteshamul Haque alias Haniful Haque alias Bholaiya (41), Md. Motaleb Mia alias Wasim (27), Md. Anwar Hossain (28), Md. Khairul.
