Dhaka, May 18: Former Superintendent of Police Babul Akter, accused in the Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case, has been sent to jail by a court. On Monday (May 17), Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan ordered him sent to jail.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Prosecution) Kazi Shahabuddin Ahmed said the PBI had produced Babul Akter in court to testify under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu. Babul Akter did not give a confessional statement.

Babul Akter's lawyer Arifur Rahman said the court had sent him to jail for not applying for a PBI remand. Earlier on May 12 (Wednesday), the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan granted a five-day remand to husband Babul Akter in the Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case.

Mahmuda Khatun Mitu was killed on June 5, 2016 at the GEC junction in Chittagong after she went out to deliver her son to school. Immediately after the incident, the then SP Babul Akhtar became the plaintiff and filed a murder case with the Panchlaish police station accusing the unidentified persons. After watching the video footage, some people were arrested.

From the beginning, the Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Police investigated the case. Later, in January 2020, the court directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case.

This month, two of Babul Akhter's business associates, Saiful and Mamun, testified in court that Babul Akter paid the killers Tk 3 lakh to kill his wife. Then on May 11, Babul was brought to Chittagong and interrogated by PBI. During interrogation, the PBI took him into custody for killing Mitu. Later, Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain filed a case against eight people, including Babul, at Panchlaish police station on May 12.
