Mitu Murder Case Mitu's killer husband ex-SP Babul arrested 5 years after murder
Dhaka, May 12: Former Superintendent of Police Babul Akter has been taken into custody by the Police-Bureau of Investigation (PBI) on Tuesday (May 11th), five years after the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in Chittagong.
Earlier, Babul Akhter was questioned at the PBI Chittagong Metro office.
After the interrogation, PBI Director General Banaj Kumar Majumder said, "The investigation into the Mitu murder case is in its final stages. The PBI is in constant discussion with the plaintiff Babul Akter. He is still being questioned today."
The latest written progress report of the investigation into the Mitu murder case was submitted to the High Court on January 30. The investigating officer of the case, PBI Inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma, submitted the report to the concerned branch of the High Court.
During the bail hearing of Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, one of the accused in the case, a virtual bench of the High Court comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman asked the investigating officer to submit a report by January 31.
On the morning of June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of the then Superintendent of Police Babul Akter, was shot and stabbed on the way to pick up her son from the school bus on Nagar Nizam Road. Babul Akhter filed a murder case with the Panchlaish police station.
Police arrested Abu Nasur Gunnu, Shah Zaman alias Robin, Saidul Alam Sikder alias Sakku alias Shahjahan, Md Anwar and Motaleb Mia alias Wasim as suspects in the case.
Ehetashamul Haque Bhola and his accomplice Md. Monir were arrested as arms suppliers in the murder case. A Point 32 bore pistol was recovered from them, which police claimed was used in Mitu's murder.
Arrested Anwar and Motaleb Mitu confessed to being involved in the murder and testified in court. In their confession, Md. Mushar, known as the source of Babul Akhtar, is named as the mastermind of Mitu's murder.
Mitu's father, former police inspector Mosharraf Hossain, blamed Babul Akter for Mitu's murder. Mosharraf Hossain said that he gave some information to the investigating officer subject to the allegations.
