Money laundering case: Arrest warrant against former Chief Justice SK Sinha, three others

Dhaka, November 10: The court has issued arrest warrants against four people, including former chief justice Surendra Kumar (SK) Sinha. The other three are Safiuddin Askari, Ranjit Chandra Saha and his wife Santri Roy. The court issued the arrest warrant as they were absconding when the verdict was announced.

SK Sinha sentenced to 11 years in prison He was sentenced to seven years in prison for money laundering and four years for embezzlement. Besides, eight accused in the case have been sentenced to different terms. Two people have been acquitted as the crime was not proved.

After the verdict was announced, ACC lawyer Mir Ahmed Ali Salam said the court had sentenced SK Sinha to 11 years in prison under two sections. The sentence of the two sections will run together.

On the other hand, the lawyer of the accused Chishti and Lutful Shahinur Rahman said, "We are not satisfied with the punishment given to Chishti and Lutful. We will move high court against the verdict."

Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-4 pronounced the verdict on Tuesday (November 9). However, the judge mentioned in the 182-page judgment that the sentence of the two sections will run simultaneously. Besides, Tk 78 lakh of SK Sinha has been confiscated in favor of the state.

The former Chief Justice has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined Tk 45 lakh under the Money Laundering Act. Besides, a fine of Tk 50,000 and four years has been imposed in the case of embezzlement. AKM Shamim, former MD of Farmers Bank, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000. Former chairman of Farmers Bank's audit committee Md Mahbubul Haque Chishti (Babul Chishti), Ranjit Chandra Saha and his wife Santri Roy have been sentenced to three years in prison.

First Vice President Swapan Kumar Roy, Vice President Md. Lutful Haque, former SEVP Gazi Salahuddin and First Vice President of Farmers Bank Safiuddin Askari have been sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined Tk 25,000 each. Besides, Mohammad Shahjahan, a resident of Tangail and Niranjan Chandra Saha, a resident of the same area have been released as the allegations were not substantiated.

Among the accused, Mahbubul Haque Chishti was in jail. He was produced in court before the verdict was announced. Surendra Kumar Sinha, Safiuddin Askari, Ranjit Chandra Saha and his wife Santri Roy are absconding. The other six accused were out on bail. They appeared in court.
