Month of Language Movement begins today

Dhaka, February 1: The month of language movement is starting today, Monday. From this day onwards, the immortal words of that immortal music will resound, 'Can I forget the Ekushey February painted in my brother's blood'. The Bengali nation will pay homage and love to the language martyrs throughout the month.

In the struggle for the establishment of the right to language, February was the first resistance of the Bengalis against colonial domination and exploitation and the first emergence of the national consciousness.

On 21 February 1952, in exchange for the blood of Salam, Jabbar, Shafiq, Barkat and Rafiq, the Bengali nation gained the status of mother tongue and socio-economic and political motivation in the brutal movement for the state language of Bengal. Along the way, the Bengali independence movement began and an independent sovereign Bangladesh was achieved through an armed struggle against the Pakistani forces for nine months in 1971.

In fact, the month of February is mournful on one side but has a glorious chapter on the other. The Bengali community gave up their lives for the freedom of their mother language, Bangla. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, some changes have been made in this year's Ekushey program. On the other hand, Ekushey's biggest month-long book fair is not starting from February 1 this year, it will be from March 18 to April 14.

Habibullah Siraji, director general of Bangla Academy, said, "The book fair will start on March 18 and end on April 14. The book fair is being organised in compliance with the hygiene rules. There may be some differences in setting up stalls due to the situation."

He said, "We are basically waiting for the situation to get better."

Meanwhile, the online book fair is starting from February 1. Information Minister and Joint General Secretary of Awami League Hasan Mahmud inaugurated the online book fair on the occasion of Amar Ekushey at the meeting room of the Information Ministry on Sunday noon. He thanked the organizers for organizing this book fair using information technology.
