More than 500 Rohingyas to be shifted to Bhasan Char

Own representative, Dhaka, 18 December: More than five hundred Rohingyas have left Cox's Bazar for the eighth phase from the Ukhia-Teknaf shelter in Cox's Bazar to Bhasan Char. On Friday (December 17), 389 Rohingyas in nine buses and six buses carrying 148 Rohingyas left Ukhia Degree College for Chittagong Naval Ghat at around 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm respectively.

At that time empty buses, several covered vans with goods and the required number of security team were on their way to Chittagong. Earlier, on November 24, 379 Rohingyas left Ukhia in the seventh phase. On November 25, they reached Bhasan Char.

Cox's Bazar Relief and Refugee Repatriation Commissioner Shah Rezwan Hayat said the government's decision would relocate about 100,000 Rohingya from the Ukhia-Teknaf camp to Bhasan Char. Those who are willing to go voluntarily after informing about the facilities, not by force, are being gathered and delivered on the appointed day. This journey will continue till the goal is achieved.

Cox's Bazar-14 APBn Commander (Superintendent of Police) Naimul Haque Naeem said about 20,000 Rohingyas have been living in Bhasan Char in eight phases since December last year. In addition, in May last year, 306 Rohingyas were rescued from the sea and taken away while trying to enter Malaysia illegally.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled the country to Bangladesh in August 2017 in the face of genocide and oppression by the Myanmar army. About 11 lakh Rohingyas are living in Cox's Bazar. In November of that year, the government launched a project to relocate one lakh Rohingyas from Cox's Bazar to Bhasan Char. The Bangladesh Navy was given the responsibility to implement the project named Asrayan-3.

According to official data, the Bhasan Char shelter Project was implemented at a cost of Tk 3,095 crore from the government's own funds for the relocation of Rohingya under the supervision of the Navy. The infrastructure of 120 cluster villages suitable for one lakh Rohingyas has been built on 13,000 acre area.
