More than 9 lakh polling officers will be appointed in 12th National Assembly polls

Dhaka, August 22: Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam said more than nine lakh polling officers will be appointed in the upcoming 12th National Assembly elections. These officers will be trained after the announcement of the election schedule.

The secretary said this while replying to the questions of journalists at the briefing after the meeting of the commission under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal at the election building on Monday.

He said that the training schedule for the 12th national parliament and other elections has been approved. The preparation of the panel of polling officers will be decided later. Training will begin in the first week of September.

Jahangir Alam said that the Election Commission wants to register the voters of expatriate Bangladeshis in UK and Saudi Arabia and give them smart NID.

He said that the progress of the pilot project of NID of Bangladeshi expatriate citizens which is going on in the United Arab Emirates was discussed. Later, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested two more countries to start work in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. Work progress was discussed.

Expressing the hope of providing NID services to Bangladeshi expatriates in the UK and Saudi Arabia before the polls, the secretary said, 'We have started it. It cannot be said when they will get this service until the team goes to the two countries. But hopefully, we can do it before the next parliamentary elections.

Regarding the privileges of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other election commissioners, he said, the Ordinance of 1983 will be converted into Bengali and sent to the Law Ministry. Today it was approved. Will go to Parliament after vetting. Everything is as before.

Jahangir Alam said that the CEC will get the facilities that the judges of the Appellate Division will get and the Election Commissioners will get the facilities that the judges of the High Court Division will get.

In response to another question, he said, "In the amendment, the issue of submitting nomination papers online has been included. Online nominations are not mandatory, but we encourage them. Another matter was approved in the meeting. When the election is held in the field, those who will be in charge will get entertainment allowance."
