Narayanganj factory fire: Death toll rises to 52

Dhaka, July 9: The death toll in the Shezan Juice Factory at Narayanganj rose to 52 people, according to reports.

The blaze is yet to be doused completely, reports added.

At least 50 others have sustained injuries.

Reports said 18 firefighting units from Narayanganj, Kanchon, Demra and Dhaka have been pressed into action and are still struggling to put out the blaze.

The blaze started around 5 pm on Thursday, according to fire officials.

The presence of chemicals may have aided the fire to spread, which is believed to have started at the ground floor of the six-storey building.

As of Friday afternoon, 49 bodies have been recovered from the fourth floor of the building, while many others are feared to be dead as the rescue operation is underway, according to reports quoting Fire Service Deputy Director (Dhaka) Debashish Vardhan.

Earlier, three workers succumbed to wounds they suffered after jumping off the building to escape the blaze.

They have been identified as Mina Akter, 40, and Swapna Rani, 38 and Musralin, 24.
