Dhaka, Oct 27: Ward councilor Irfan Salim, son of Dhaka-7 MP Haji Salim, and his bodyguard Mohammad Zahid, have been jailed for a year by a RAB mobile court. They were sent to jail on Monday night.

At a press conference on Monday evening, RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Lieutenant Colonel Ashiq Billah said the two were sentenced to six months in prison each for possessing illegal walkie-talkies and six months each for possession of foreign drugs.

Earlier in the afternoon, RAB started raiding Irfan Selim's house.

The operation recovered 38 walkie-talkies, five VPS sets, a pistol along with weapons, a single-barreled gun, a briefcase, a handcuff, a drone and seven bottles of foreign liquor and beer.

The rescue operation was led by RAB Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam.

Irfan Salim said during the interrogation that he used these walkie-talkies to communicate with the leaders and followers within five to 12 kilometers of his house.

According to RAB, the rescued VPS sets could not be detected by the law enforcement agencies. They were rescued from the control rooms on the fourth and fifth floors of his house.

Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam said Irfan Salim could not give a satisfactory answer about the weapons and handcuffs. We think he used to intimidate the common people with these. Both of his weapons had no license.

On Sunday (October 25) night, Wasif Ahmed Khan, a naval officer, was beaten after getting out of a government vehicle with MP Haji Mohammad Selim's 'Member of Parliament' written on it. The incident took place near Kalabagan signal in the capital.

Despite the GD incident in the night, a case was filed against seven people including Haji Selim's son this (Monday) morning.

Irfan Selim was arrested in a raid on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the court has remanded Haji Salim's driver Mizanur Rahman for one day. The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Mohammad Noman passed the order.
