Naval officer's assault: Councillor Irfan Salim suspended

Dhaka, October 28: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Ward no. 30 Councillor Irfan Salim has been suspended. An order was issued by the local government department dismissing him on Tuesday (October 27) night.

Irfan was suspended for assaulting a naval officer. 

law enforcement officials raided his house and a RAB mobile court sentenced him to a year in prison. Irfan is the son of Haji Salim, MP of Dhaka-7 constituency and son-in-law of Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, MP of Noakhali.

According to the circular, a criminal case has been filed against Councillor Irfan Salim for assaulting a Bangladesh Navy officer and his wife.

He was also sentenced by a mobile court to one year imprisonment for drinking foreign liquor and another month's imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Tk 50,000. He is already in jail.

Irfan was sentenced by a mobile court to six months in prison for possessing and using illegal walkie-talkies, the order said. It further said that the process of filing more cases against Irfan for illegal possession of weapons and drugs is underway. His actions include crimes of moral turpitude and misconduct under the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009.

Therefore, according to the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, he was suspended from the post of councilor of ward 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation.

Wasim Ahmed Khan, a naval officer, was beaten on Sunday after Irfan got out of a government vehicle with MP Haji Mohammad Salim's 'Member of Parliament' written on it.

The incident took place near Kalabagan signal in the capital. Despite the GD at night, a case was filed against seven people, including Haji Salim's son Irfan, on Monday (October 26) morning. Later in the afternoon, Irfan was arrested by RAB.
