Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 17: Putting an end to all speculations, Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy has been re-elected as the Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) by a huge margin. This is her hat-trick and third win in a row. Earlier, she had won for the first time in 2011 and for the second time in 2016.

After polling was conducted from morning to afternoon on Sunday (January 16), the results started coming in from the afternoon. Returning Officer of NCC Election Mahfuza Akhter announced the results. The unofficial results of the announced 192 centres show that the ruling Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Ivy got one lakh 61 thousand 273 votes for the Boat symbol. Her nearest rival independent candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker got 92,171 votes for the elephant symbol.

Earlier, the polls were held from 8 am to 4 pm in 1,333 polling booths in 192 polling stations in 27 wards of the city corporation.

According to the Election Commission, about 50 percent of the votes were cast against the five lakh 17 thousand 361 voters in the EVM system. No major irregularities or clashes were reported during the election.

Selina Hayat Ivy expressed confidence about her victory after casting her vote. "If the vote is fair, I will win. The boat must win. I am 100 percent sure of winning," she said.

In the end, with this landslide victory, Ivy became the first woman in the history of the country to clinch hat-trick win in the NCC mayoral race.

After casting his vote in the morning, Taimur Alam Khandaker said, "I will accept any verdict of the people if there is no visible manipulation by the government or the Election Commission."

Despite the election-centric distance with Ivy, local MP Shamim Osman, who casted vote in the afternoon, said, "I chose the boat. I hope the boat will win by a huge margin."
