Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 21: Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni has said that it is not right that there will be no exams in the new curriculum, there will be exams and in some cases there will be no exams. There will be continuous evaluation where there will be exams.

She said this while speaking at the award distribution and closing ceremony of the programme 'Know Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Liberation War' at the International Mother Language Institute auditorium on Monday.

The Education Minister virtually took part in the event as the chief guest. Deputy Minister for Education Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury joined the programme as a special guest.

The Education Minister said that many people may still have doubts about the new curriculum. Most people are right, but many are skeptical.

She added, "Some people say there will be no test. So how the assessment will be done? There will be no exams, in fact it is not right. Somewhere there will be many tests, but in some cases there will be no exam. But just because there are no exams does not mean that there will be no evaluation. There will be continuous evaluation."

"As much as we have to have respect for teachers, we have to have confidence in them," she said, referring to whether students would be held hostage by teachers as they would be part of a continuous assessment. "We want to implement the curriculum. I am trying to change the quality of education as a whole."

"We have learned a lot by memorizing. But I could not remember. Students will now learn to apply, will be able to contain what they will learn," she added.

She said, "I think we can make our students the way Bangabandhu wanted our people through this education system. Independent education of an independent country should be taught, not colonial education. So that students will be science minded, will be humane people. That's the kind of people we can build."

The Education Minister said that the way students are getting to know the history of the Liberation War through the programme 'Know Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Liberation War' could not be known just by reading the history book, and that's why we're emphasizing experience-based learning in the new curriculum."
