New Market clash: DB, RAB raid Dhaka College, detain one

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 25: The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) intelligence team carried out the raid at Dhaka College in connection with last Monday-Tuesday's clash in New Market area that had claimed two lives.

They raided room no. 101 of the college's international dormitory on Sunday (April 24) from 5 pm to 5:30 pm. One person had been detained for questioning during the raid. Police said that Emon, a Dhaka College student allegedly involved in the clash between Dhaka College students and New Market traders, was staying in that particular room.

Witnesses said that after the raid by DB police and RAB, two mobile phones were seized and a student named Zaheer Hasan Jewel was detained and taken away. The arrested Jewel is a member of the latest convening committee of Dhaka College Chhatra League and a student of the Accounting department of the college.

Md. Kamruzzaman, a lecturer in the Department of History and Culture of Islam and also the caretaker of the hostel, acknowledged the truth of the raid. He said two mobile phone sets had been seized, though he had no information whether any student had been detained for interrogation.

Businessmen and employees of New Market had started clashing with the students of Dhaka College around 12 am on April 18. The clash lasted for about two and a half hours. After that the situation was brought under control at night but the clashes started again after 10 am on Tuesday (April 19), which lasted till evening.

More than 50 people from both sides were injured in the clash and several of them are undergoing treatments at different hospitals. Some of them are in critical condition. In addition, two people, who had been seriously injured in the clash, died later in hospital. One of them was a deliveryman, and the other was a shop's employee.
