New militant organization's founder Shamin Mahfuz, his wife arrested

Dhaka, June 24: Professor Shamin Mahfuz, the founder of the new militant organization Jamatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, and his wife have been arrested. The members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) arrested them from Demra area of the capital on Friday night. A large amount of weapons and explosives have been seized at this time.

It is known that Shamin Mahfuz alias Shamin Sir alias Mending Murong was brilliant in his student life. Board stood in SSC and HSC. After that, he was admitted to the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University. Passed with first class. Became a teacher at Open University in 2003. He taught till 2011. Also engaged in PhD research on the Khumi community, a small ethnic group of the Chittagong Hill Tracts under the National University. He started living in the mountains. He got involved in militant activities. Members began to collect. At one point, he himself formed a new militant organization. Named 'Jamatul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya'.

Shamin was arrested twice due to involvement in militancy. He was last arrested in 2014. He has been missing since he was released on bail in 2017 in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Ansar al-Islam, Harkatul Jihad Bangladesh (HUGB) – Banned militant organizations – Shamin played a leading role in creating a new militant platform by bringing in members from these organizations.

According to multiple sources of law enforcement, the extremists addressed him as 'Sir' as he was a teacher. His other name is 'Mending Murong'. During the militant activities in the hilly areas, he exchanged messages with the members of the organization in this name. There are five cases against Shamin in Thanchi and Jatrabari police stations of Bandarban.

This former teacher of Bangladesh Open University played the role of the main coordinator of the militant organization, including training in the mountains, collection of heavy weapons. CTTC received this sensational information from a militant who escaped from the hill camp.
