Dhaka, December 12: Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury said that the language-cultural similarity between India and Bangladesh is remarkable. She said this during a courtesy meeting with the newly appointed High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pranay Kumar Verma at the Speaker's Sangsad Bhavan office on Sunday (December 11).

During this time, they discussed Bangladesh-India long friendly relations, expansion of business and trade, economic development of the two countries, energy cooperation, climate change, women empowerment etc.

Shirin Sharmin said that the diplomatic wisdom and ideological leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi laid the foundation of the historical relationship between the two countries. India gave shelter and all kinds of support to the Bangladeshi refugees during the Great War of Liberation, which the people of this country remember with respect.

She said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, India-Bangladesh relations have become more established and consolidated. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the activities of the Ganga water sharing agreement, land boundary agreement with India etc. have been completed. Bangladesh India mutual cooperation in climate change, women empowerment, regional peace and security will strengthen the relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile, the Speaker sought India's cooperation in dealing with the global energy crisis and the peaceful repatriation of the Rohingyas.

The speaker said that many other common issues exist between the two countries, including a common river basin. Development of railway and other means of communication with the whole of India, including the Seven Sisters states, can improve the socio-economic conditions of both the countries. Recently, a delegation led by Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly Biswajit Daimari visited Bangladesh National Parliament and exchanged views, which strengthened the long-standing India-Bangladesh relationship.

Meanwhile, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury expressed her interest in inviting the Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Om Birla and others to the 50th anniversary of the Bangladesh National Parliament.

Appreciating the unprecedented development of Bangladesh under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, High Commissioner Pranay Kumar Verma said that the relationship between the people of India and Bangladesh is very cordial. The cultural background of the two countries is the same. The historical relations between the two countries can be further strengthened through the exchange of visits by parliamentary delegations. The High Commissioner expressed the opinion that if India-Bangladesh can face the global challenges jointly, the socio-economic conditions will improve.
