Newly elected President Md. Shahabuddin takes oath

Dhaka, April 24: Md. Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh. He succeeded the 21st President Md. Abdul Hamid.

Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury administered the oath to the newly elected President Md. Shahabuddin at the Darbar Hall of Bangabavan on Monday (April 24).

After reciting the oath outgoing President Md. Abdul Hamid greeted the new President Md. Shahabuddin with flowers. After that, the new President and Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury signed the oath document. As per custom, Md. Abdul Hamid and Md. Sahabuddin officially exchanged the chairs immediately after taking the oath.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, several hundred distinguished guests including cabinet members were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, Members of Parliament, Chief Election Commissioner, Supreme Court Justices, political leaders, chiefs of three armed forces, diplomats, editors, senior journalists and senior civil and military officials attended the event. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by Cabinet Secretary Md. Mahbub Hossain.

This evening the new President will formally ascend the Bangabhaban. As part of the ceremony, the new president will be given a "guard of honour" tomorrow morning.

Earlier on 13 February 2023, 73-year-old Md. Shahabuddin was elected as the 22nd President of Bangladesh.
