Rohingya: NGOs start work in Bhashan Char

Dhaka, December 3: Various domestic and foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are working alongside the government for the development of the Rohingya community who have taken refuge in Bangladesh after being displaced from Myanmar. It has been alleged that NGOs have been opposing the relocation of these displaced people to Bhasanchar. Recently, 22 NGOs have started working.

Representatives of these NGOs visited the housing for Rohingyas in Bhasanchar more than once and expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made by the government. They said that all the facilities that are needed in a good quality residential area are present there.

Meanwhile, Pulse Bangladesh Society; Kuwait Society for Relief; Friendship; SAWB; Sharjah Charity International: Bangladesh; Global Development Agency; Al Manahil Welfare; Sony International; Alhaj Shamsul Haq Foundation; Help the Needy Charitable Trust; Jonosobha Kendra; Caritas Bangladesh;�Samaj Kalyan Unnayan Shangstha (SKUS); Social Aid; CDD; Mukti-Cox's Bazar; Voluntary Organization for Social Development; RTM International; Multi-Serv International; Allama Faizullah Foundation; Gonoshastho Kendra; and Health and Education for All have all started work there.

About two and a half thousand Rohingyas, who took refuge in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, in the face of repression by the Myanmar army, will be taken to Bhasanchar in early December.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas will be relocated to the island in various stages. That is why this silent island floating in the lap of the sea is having a very busy time now.

It is learned that till November 29, the government and NGOs have taken 66 tons of food items to Bhasanchar. First the Rohingyas will be brought to Chittagong for relocation. From there they will be taken to Bhasanchar. Fourteen naval ships have been kept ready for this. The first two months they will be provided with cooked food. Then they will be able to cook at their respective residences.

Talking to the concerned people, it is learned that this temporary shelter for the Rohingyas, built at a cost of around Tk 3,100 crore, is now operational. The Bangladesh Navy was tasked with making the island habitable, developing infrastructure, afforesting and ensuring security.

In addition to modern housing for the Rohingya, administrative and residential buildings of the civil administration, buildings of law enforcement agencies, mosques, buildings required for use as schools, hospitals, clinics and playgrounds have been constructed.

Buffaloes, sheep, ducks and pigeons are being reared there for conducting economic activities. Different types of vegetables are being planted. Paddy is also being cultivated experimentally there.
