Nine killed in Chapainawabganj road accident

Dhaka, November 19: At least nine people were killed and four others injured when a trolley carrying paddy fell into a ditch in Sonamasjid Barek Bazar area of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj. The accident took place around 6 am on Thursday (November 19).

The vehicle was carrying 16 people, including the driver.

The deceased were identified as Babu of Baliadighi of Shahbazpur union of Shibganj upazila of the district; Tajemul Haque and son Mithun; Md. Karim; Milu; Abul Kashem; Laoghata residents Ataur Rahman; Ahad Ali and trolley driver Masud Rana of Sonapur village.

Shibganj Police Station OC Farid Hossain said 12 farmers were returning home after harvesting paddy from Barind area in a trolley. On the way, the trolley lost control and fell into a nearby ditch when it reached Bhangabridge in Sonapur-Barikbazar area of ​​Daipukuria union of Shibganj upazila.

Seven people died on the spot and two more died while undergoing treatment.

Police have recovered the bodies of the deceased and the injured have been sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Shibganj UNO Shakib Al Rabbi said the local administration had handed over the bodies to the family members of the victims.

Each victim's family has been given Tk 10,000.

Police and local administration said the trolley contained 75 sacks of paddy. The vehicle was overloaded. The road was also sloping. Unable to control, the trolley overturned and fell into a water-filled ditch on the side of the road.

Upon receiving the news of the accident, Chapainawabganj Superintendent of Police HM Abdur Rakib visited the spot.
