Dhaka, December 5: Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader has said that no other party in the country practices democracy except the Awami League.

"Cannot expect those to establish democracy in other countries who do not practice them at home," he said.

He said this after laying a wreath at the grave of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy on the occasion of his 57th death anniversary on Saturday (December 5) morning.

Obaidul Quader said, "Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy has fought for democracy all his life, he wanted to institutionalise democracy. Today, on the day of his death, our pledge will be to institutionalise democracy. In order to institutionalise democracy, internal democracy needs to be practiced which no one does except the Awami League."

Asked why the government is silent in the ongoing anti-sculpture movement in the country, Quader said "We have formed the government. We cannot afford to get angry easily. Our Prime Minister is handling everything. The way she is dealing with Coronavirus, she will deal with everything with courage. There are sculptures in countries all over the world, there are sculptures in Muslim countries too. If the construction of sculpture there is not anti-Islamic, then why in our country?

Apart from Awami League, Awami League affiliates including Bangladesh Chhatra League, Juba League, Sramik League and Krishak League also laid wreaths at Suhrawardy grave.
